Northeast Harbor, Maine is considered to be
the most enchanting village on Mount
Desert Island near Acadia. An unspoiled Main Street has quality
shops with old-fashioned hours and service.
Golf,
tennis, swimming, a botanical library and gardens open to the
public are all nearby. A short walk from the inn are a small
museum of local history and the public library with a “Maine” collection.
Just down the hill from Main Street, the beautiful harbor offers
sailing, naturalist cruises, and excursion and ferry boats. Some
of the loveliest and less-frequented sections of Acadia National
Park are to be found in Northeast Harbor.
Paths and trails connect also to trails, open to the public,
which traverse private lands. Down the street from the inn is
a hiking trail which connects to trails right into Acadia.
Originally designed for horse-drawn carriages, the park's carriage
trail system of dirt roads, closed to cars, provides excellent
bike riding and easy hiking. Bike rentals are available locally,
and horse drawn carriage rides are available in neighboring
Seal Harbor.
